Talented Children Are Young At Art!

Talented youngsters throughout the county borough were rewarded for their creative efforts by entering an art competition at Rhondda Heritage Park.

The budding young artists aged between three and 17 entered the Heritage Park’s annual young@art competition and attended a presentation evening to see their work on display and hear the judge’s winning selection.

Following an invitation to enter up to two artworks in any media, youngsters from Rhondda Cynon Taf certainly rose to the challenge.

Masterpieces in all kinds of media flooded in including oils, watercolours, acrylics, gouache, charcoal, collage and clay giving the judge, artist Ceri Barclay a difficult task in selecting just three winners in each of the three age categories.

AWARDS: Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf Cllr Smith and his consort Mrs Margaret Smith joined Santa and the winners!

The Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Cllr Robert Smith presented the following winners with prizes of gift vouchers from Churchill’s Art & Stationery, Pontypridd.

Cllr Smith said: “The exceptionally high standard of entries is quite staggering and congratulations must go not just to the winners, but everyone who displayed their creative talents by entering the competition.

“I am continually amazed at the gifted young people who reside in the county borough and competitions such as this provide an invaluable showcase to display such talents.”

GIFTED: Lowri Jones won her category

In the three to seven year-old category, the first prize was presented to Lowri James of Porth for her mixed-media painting entitled “In My Dreams.” Molly Underhill of Miskin received second prize for her acrylic painting “Molly’s Red Butterfly” and Demi Williams of Tonypandy received third prize for “Demi’s House and Garden” in acrylics.

Rebecca Handley Lloyd of Clydach Vale won the first prize in the eight to 11 year-old category for her piece in gouache called “Autumn”. Abby Jones, also of Clydach, was awarded second prize for the watercolour “Abby’s Jake The Dog” and Trent Harries of Porth took third prize for “The Royal Cathedral” in inks.

Finally, the third category of 12 to 17 year-olds was won by Diana Isajeva of Mountain Ash for her oil pastel entitled “Butterfly Effect”. Caitlin Lavagna of Porth received second prize for her acrylic “Spanish Rhapsody” and Kimberlee Davies of Aberdare took third prize for “A Splash of Colour” in acrylics.

The exhibition, supported by Churchill’s Art & Stationery and Rhondda Housing Association is on display at Rhondda Heritage Park Gallery until Christmas Eve.

Many of the artworks are for sale with prices starting from £5. Visitors to the exhibition are also invited to vote for their favourite artwork to win the Visitors Choice Award.
