Bypass Engineers' £6,000 Fundraising Scheme

Church Village Bypass Construction Team members have raised more than £6,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s contractors Costain, have made major donations to the charity following efforts by the team and their chain partners.

In October a team of 10 runners completed the Cardiff Half Marathon and a Halloween party was organised at the Llantwit Fardre Sports and Social Club that included a fancy dress competition. At Christmas all staff contributed to the costs of the annual dinner dance and also supported a raffle and the auction of a Wales rugby shirt signed by the autumn international squad.

In total the team raised £6,029 and Dan Powrie, Construction Manager for Costain presented the cheque to Carolyn Holt, the Wales Regional Fundraising Manager for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust at the Church Village site office.

Brian Greaves, Community Relations Manager for Costain said: ‘Through a number of team building and social events and the generosity of our staff and our strategic and supply chain partners we have surpassed the target we set ourselves this year. The team has enjoyed the fund raising events and it is pleasing to be able to support such a good cause.”

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Customer Care Cllr Andrew Morgan explained: “The Church Village Bypass team have undertaken so much exemplary fundraising work during the past few years and I know how much their contributions mean to the charities involved.

“Once again this underlines their commitment to not only providing a first-class project like the Church Village Bypass itself but by supporting local and national organizations in a way that will have a positive effect on so very many individuals throughout the country.”

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the UK's most common, life threatening inherited disease which affects the lungs and digestive system. Over 8,500 people in the UK have Cystic Fibrosis and over 350 people in Wales.

Surprisingly 1 in 25 of the UK population carry the faulty gene and with a population in Wales of 3 million that means there are potentially 120,000 people here who carry it. A staggering amount of these people are completely unaware.

This year saw the start of a pilot study into our long awaited gene therapy treatment which will be followed by the full clinical trial.

Wales Regional Fundraising Manager for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust Carolyn Holt added: “This is a fantastic effort again this year by the Costain team and their partners at Church Village bypass. In fact it brings the total raised in the past four years to nearly £12,000 and we are extremely grateful to all concerned.”
