Pontypridd will play host to the County's first Civic Weekend. The event to be called 'The Big Weekend in the Park' is set to become the highlight of the Council's Events Calendar and will culminate in a live open air concert which will feature a range of high profile Welsh artists with a headline performer soon to be announced.
The Big Weekend in the Park to be held in Ynysangharad Park will deliver an exciting weekend of activities on July 18-21, bringing a great line-up of family entertainment.
The Big Weekend in the Park has been created by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council following the success of previous major concerts and events such as the Tom Jones Homecoming, The Full Ponty Festival and the Big Anthem Concert in Ynysangharad Park, Pontypridd.
This year, the weekend of entertainment will feature:
A Family Open Air Cinema in association with Red Dragon FM
Two special concerts at the Muni Arts Centre
A Free Family Fun Day and Concert in the Park Headlined by Major Welsh Artists
2008 is also the 40th anniversary of the County Borough's first official international twinning link. This link was established between Pontypridd and Nurtingen, Germany, and the live concert will be used to mark this important anniversary for the County.
Christian Hanagan, Head of Strategy, said:
"Preparations for the Council's 'Big Weekend in the Park' are at an advanced stage and the Council will shortly be in a position to announce the headline artists set to perform at the live concert.
"Over the last three years, Pontypridd and Rhondda -Cynon Taf have showcased their ability to stage and deliver major concerts and events which raise the profile of the town and County across the UK.
"The Big Weekend is set to be a very family orientated event and will provide a new way for people to enjoy the park and importantly showcase Pontypridd.
"Highlights of the event include an Open Air Cinema and a live concert.
"The Open Air cinema, in association with Red Dragon FM, will screen well known classic movies in the stunning surroundings of the Park.
"The live concert will be led by an exciting line up of Welsh talent and will appeal to a wider audience than previously experienced in the Park.
"This is the first event of its kind outside Cardiff and Swansea and for the first time Pontypridd will play host to a weekend of activities and entertainment.
"Facilitating and co-ordinating high profile events within Pontypridd is a major part of the Council's Regeneration Strategy for the town and the Big Weekend will deliver major economic benefits for the County.
"Previous events have delivered significant visitors to Pontypridd and provided important extra trade for local businesses and the Big Weekend in the Park is set to do the same.
"Importantly, the event will again promote Rhondda Cynon Taf and Pontypridd on the national stage.
"Arrangements are in their final stages and the Council will be issuing full details of this event in the coming weeks."
